The Curriculum Behind Our Competitive Programs
What is MAG and why does it matter?
MAG stands for Men's Artistic Gymnastics. It's the most widely recognized discipline of gymnastics in the world, and the one you watch at the Olympics. In Canada, all MAG competitive programs follow the pathway set by Gymnastics Canada, which includes the Canadian Competitive Program (CCP).
Canadian Competitive Program (CCP)
The Canadian Provinical Program consists of six progressive levels recognized at clubs across the country. Levels 1 and 2 use compulsory routines with flexible options that allow athletes to work to their strengths while developing foundational technique. Levels 3 and up transition to optional routines, giving athletes the opportunity to showcase individuality, creativity, and advanced skill combinations. This pathway guides gymnasts from local events all the way to Western and National competitions, providing a clear and supportive progression for athletes as they grow within the sport.
High Performance Pathway
The High Performance Pathway begins at age 13 and includes three distinct age‑specific programs designed to prepare athletes for elite‑level training and competition. This pathway emphasizes advanced skill development, physical preparation, and performance standards required at the national level. Athletes in the High Performance Pathway work toward qualifying for Canadian Championships, where they can represent their province and compete among the top gymnasts in the country once all requirements are met.

FAQ
View our most asked questions about our competitive programs.
Tryouts are skill assessments conducted by our coaching staff, not auditions designed to intimidate. We evaluate each athlete's current skill level, physical readiness, coordination, and coachability to determine the best program fit. We're not looking for perfection; we're looking for potential, work ethic, and the right attitude. To book a tryout, use the Schedule a Tryout button on this page and we'll confirm a date directly with you.Tryout results are communicated in a straightforward, honest conversation, and we believe parents and athletes deserve transparency about where they're at and what the pathway forward looks like.
Safety is the foundation on which everything else is built at Gymtastics. Our coaching staff are fully certified through Gymnastics Canada and the Alberta Gymnastics Federation, and every coach undergoes background checks before working with athletes. Skills are taught progressively and no athlete is asked to attempt something they haven't been physically and mentally prepared for. Our facility is purpose-built for gymnastics with regulation-standard equipment on all apparatus, and athletes are required to report any aches, pains, or injuries to their coach before training begins. All Gymtastics competitive athletes are covered by Gymnastics Canada and AGF insurance, included in the annual membership fee. We don't take shortcuts with safety, and we don't support "winning at all costs" approaches that put short-term results ahead of long-term athlete wellbeing.
Absolutely, and they're not alone. Our pre-competitive programs are specifically designed for young athletes with no competition experience at all, introducing the discipline, technical foundation, and team culture of competitive gymnastics in an age-appropriate, encouraging way. Our programs provide a wonderful first competition environment, offering real routines and real meets. Many of our competitive athletes started as preschoolers in our recreational classes and grew from there. We meet every athlete exactly where they are.
Training hours depend entirely on the program your daughter is placed in following her tryout, and our coaching team will be upfront with you about expectations before you sign anything. As a general guide: our youngest pre-competitive athletes train approximately 4–6 hours per week, progressing up to 12–20 hours per week for our higher-level CCP competitive athletes. All competitive programs run on a commitment period covering July 1 to June 30, with mandatory summer training weeks included as part of the package. Specific training days and times are assigned based on team placement and will be discussed with you after the tryout.
The MAG competition season in Alberta typically runs from January through May. Athletes compete at selected invitationals across the province, with higher-level athletes advancing to provincials, Westerns, and Nationals. Athletes at lower levels (CCP 1–2) generally attend 2 competitions per season; provincial and national-level athletes compete more frequently and may travel beyond Alberta. Gymtastics issues a Participation Agreement Form up to five months before each competition, giving families full cost details and time to make an informed decision before committing. All families are asked to plan holidays around competition season (November–May) to ensure athletes get the consistent preparation they need to perform safely and confidently.
Competitive gymnastics carries a universal standard of conduct, and Gymtastics upholds it. Athletes must arrive to training clean, neat, and ready to work. Hair must be tied back and off the face if longer. Jewelry is not permitted during training or at competitions. Athletes wear the official Gymtastics competitive bodysuit, tracksuit, and training suit as required, available through the club.
On the behaviour side, we hold all athletes (and their families) to a standard of respect, honesty, and sportsmanship. No profanity, no negative conduct toward coaches, teammates, or judges, and a zero-tolerance approach to any substance use. We believe character development and gymnastics development go hand in hand.
Yes! Gymtastics has a mezzanine viewing area available to parents. To minimize distractions and allow athletes to focus fully on their development, we ask parents to limit viewing to bi-weekly or once a month. This isn't about keeping you in the dark; it's about giving your child the best possible training environment. Coaches are available to discuss your athlete's progress, and we encourage open communication outside of training time.
Safety and prevention are our priorities, but injury can happen in any competitive sport, and Gymtastics has clear, structured policies to support your athlete through it. Any injury, ache, or pain must be reported to the coach before training begins. If your child is unable to train for more than four weeks due to injury, a medical certificate from her doctor allows for modified training fees during the recovery period. During recovery, adjusted training sessions are provided where possible to maintain fitness within their physical capacity. A written medical clearance is required before they resume full training. Throughout any recovery, our coaches maintain open communication with your family to make sure the return to training is safe and well-timed.
Gymtastics has a clear communication structure, so you always know whom to contact and how. Athletes direct day-to-day questions to their coaches. Team logistics go through the team coordinator. Financial matters are handled by the team registrar. And Travis Oxley, our owner, provides overall leadership and is available for escalated concerns. Official contact information is provided in our team handbook. We are a family-run gym and we take open, honest communication seriously.
